In preparation for this evening’s DesignPitch, IELC partnered once again with VCU for a workshop on effective presentation for their prototyped product concept and design.  Scott Sherman and Jay Adams, professors at VCU’s Robertson School of Media & Culture facilitated a workshop on the power of visual and verbal storytelling in presentation and best practices in branding including naming, logo design and branding.

To effectively communicate the unique value of your design, the impact it will have and what action we should take, we need stories.  Stories make us care, particularly when they are focused on human characters experiencing struggle; they can drive us to act when they show the benefits in a very sensory way – resolving conflict.

Teams worked on branding their products, with simple, compact visuals that are smart with type.  Artistic teammembers emerged as leaders, highlighting the multitple strengths among us.

Ultimately, when it comes time to present, students should keep their stories simple and avoid the instinct to overexplain.
