Before traveling to Yangzhou, we were able to spend a little time inShanghai  learning about the history of the city. We also learned a great deal from our guide for the day about the current challenges facing the city of 20 million. She shared with us her concerns and hopes for the future. Standing on the Bund, the riverbank promenade, we were awed by both the futuristic skyline across the river and the European style historic buildings behind us. Our students also enjoyed getting to meet some Chinese tourists from rural areas who had not encountered Americans before and were very curious about us. Our day in Shanghai embodied the unique history and character of the city as a connecter between the East and West.
